Wharton Speaker Series: Bill Owens The Wharton Club of Hong Kong has cordially invited us once again to its Speaker Series. For those who have attended in the past, I'm sure you'd have found it to be a great event. For those who have yet to attend the speaker series, this is the finale for 2009 so take this opportunity to join. The finale of the Wharton Speaker Series of 2009 will feature Bill Owens. The topic of his speech will be "What you may not know about global business".
Owens is the former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and current Chairman of AEA Investors (Asia). Prior to joining AEA, Owens was CEO and Vice Chairman of Nortel.
Based in Hong Kong, he also serves on the boards of Wipro in India, Daimler AG in Germany, and Polycom, Embarq and Intelius in the United States. Having served on the board of directors of over 20 public companies, he also founded two technology companies, Lumera and Extend America, a company that brings broadband wireless to rural communities. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at the Brookings Institution, the Pacific Advisory Board of the Rand Corporation, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
A firm supporter of strong U.S.-China relations, Owens started the Sanya Initiative, a high-level military to military dialogue between senior ranking retired Chinese and American military commanders, in 2008. That same year, he cochaired a task force on cyber-terrorism at the National Academy of Sciences. As a result of his public and private endeavors, Owens has developed strong relationships with key leaders in China, India, Japan etc.
Owens has written more than 50 articles on national security and authored the book "High Seas." His latest book, "Lifting the Fog of War," was published in April 2000. He is a 1962 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University and a master’s degree in management from George Washington University.
